Independent Bookstore Day!

Burke's Book Store is joining book stores across the country to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.

"Consumers control the marketplace by deciding where to spend their money. If what a bookstore offers matters to you, then shop at a bookstore. If you feel that the experience of reading a book is valuable, then read a book. This is how we change the world: we grab hold of it. We change ourselves."
---Ann Patchett, author and co-owner of Parnassus Books in Nashville.

Burke’s will be celebrating with giveaways of advance reading copies and Burke’s Book Store bags, drawings for special prizes, kid’s activities, cookies, and more!

Available in a limited supply (exclusively for Independent Book Store Day) will be signed copies of The Sandmeyer Reaction ($6 paperback), a short story by Michael Chabon). This is a short story that was cut from Michael Chabon’s newest novel, Moonglow. It’s a hilarious side-story of the half-baked plan to catch a German spy via the well-connected Jews of Philadelphia’s underbelly in the 1940s. In typical Chabon style, it’s fast and funny, and bursting with a cast of perfectly rendered outcasts and oddballs.

Pictured above are Bob Eckstein's portraits of Burke's Book Store. The one on the left is a portrait of the original store that was on N Main street for nearly 100 years. The one on the right is our 4th and current location in Cooper-Young.

Our featured adult title for the day will be Bob Eckstein’s Footnotes from the World's Greatest Bookstores: True Tales and Lost Moments from Book Buyers, Booksellers, and Book Lovers, available at 25% off cover price for that day only. Illustrator, writer and cartoonist Bob Eckstein was inspired to paint "the greatest bookstores of the world" after he contributed a piece about bookshops to the New Yorker. Amassing hundreds of quotes and insights into the value of independent stores from owners and employees, writers, celebrities and readers, Eckstein presents beautiful illustrations of 75 beloved shops, pairing them with charming quotes, stories and facts particular to each locale. Burke’s Book Store is proud to be one of the featured stores. Each customer who purchases this title will receive a poster featuring some of the stores in the book.

Our featured children’s titles for the day will be Little Golden Books. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Little Golden Book series, these titles will be available at 25% off cover price for that day only. We will have a “Make Your Own Little Golden Book” activities throughout the day.

The third annual National Independent Bookstore Day is sponsored in part by Penguin Random House, Ingram, and The American Booksellers Association.
