A selection from Pictures from Lang and Fellini:

The Clown at the Onset of the Twentieth Century

Nimble Buster Keaton, buffeted
by hurricane winds,
bounces through a world flying
in pieces about him.
Buildings turn to lumber, walls
collapse while doorways
turn inside out. He endures.
How could he know that later
the century would unleash
the same sort of chaos, except
without slapstick,
and that it would blacken our souls
with the thoroughness
of its roughshod Gotterdammerung?
