Mathes, J. Harvey The Old Guard in Gray
"Sketches of Memphis veterans who upheld her standard in the war, and of other Confederate worthies." Biographies of Confederate Historical Association members in Memphis, many of whom served with Forrest. 446 pages. Numerous photographs.

Capers, Gerald M. The Biography of a River Town
History of Memphis from Indian days through the early 20th Century. The only complete modern history of the city, by a professional historian. 318 pages. Illustrations, bibliography, index.

All four reprints are softcover and are priced at $19.95.

Church, Annette E. & Church, Roberta The Robert R. Churches of Memphis: A Father and Son Who Achieved in Spite of Race Original 1974 edition
The biography of Mr. Church, Sr. and Mr. Church, Jr., two of the great black leaders of Memphis. The Senior Mr. Church, of whom John Overton, Jr. said "Your name will live in Memphis long after you have crossed the river...", rose from slavery to become the founder of the first African-American bank in Memphis and owner of extensive real estate holdings and businesses. The Junior Mr. Church founded the Lincoln League to register and educate voters despite vicious opposition by the general public and Organized the NAACP in Memphis and in Tennessee.
